ENEA is the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development.
It hase been established as such in September 2009 but it inherited all the expertise, skills and capability from previous research bodies, i.e. the CNRN (National Committee for Nuclear Research) 1952, CNEN (National Committee for Nuclear Energy) 1960, also developing and promoting research at industrial level, and since 1982 onwards it turned onto ENEA as the Entity for research and development of Nuclear and Alternative Energy, dealing as such with renewable energy sources, rational use of energy and environmental impact and innovation technologies. Additional reforms strengthened ENEA’s role as public body that also supports the Italian competitiveness and sustainable development policies and provides services to the energy sector.
Nowadays its main activities concern research, innovation and advanced services in the fields of energy and sustainable economic development. As National Agency it supports central and local Public Administrations, enterprises and citizens.
Three Technical Units are devoted to:
1. The promotion of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources
2. R&TD of Renewable Technologies
3. Advanced Technologies for Energy and Industry
ENEA is composed of 13 Research Centres, 12 Consultancy Offices on integrated energy matters along the Italian territory and a Liaison office in Brussels.
As “National Agency for Energy Efficiency”, (according to Directive 2006/32/CE provisions) , ENEA provides:
1. support to Public Administration, information and training to PA and civil society,
2. development of advanced technologies for energy and industry,
3. studies and research for electric power saving in the service, civil, public lighting, air-conditioning, transport sectors, under a Programme Agreement with the Italian Ministry of Economic Development.
As for the field of Renewable Energy Sources, activities spin around research, innovation, and technology transfer, specifically focused on the following technologies: Concentrated Solar Thermal Energy, Photovoltaics, Biomass and Biofuels, Solar Thermal Energy at low and medium temperatures, Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Energy Storage Systems. Advanced services are also provided to the national aim of both decreasing CO2 emissions and the national energy dependence on fossil sources.
ENEA’s Key words: Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy Sources, Nuclear Energy, Climate and the Environment, Safety and Health, New Technologies and advanced applications, Electric System Research , experimental facilities, Specialized laboratories, Advanced equipment, Dissemination and Transfer of research results, Training and Information, Public Knowledge and Awareness.
